Ingredients

Sauce
  • one 28 oz / 795 g can whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 3 tablespoons taco or Southwestern seasoning
  • half an onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 jalapeno, ribs and seeds removed
  • ½ teaspoon salt (more to taste)

Method

Preparation
  1. Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until combined into a smooth sauce.
  2. Use the sauce immediately.

Notes

For added flavor and depth, the sauce can be simmered together for 15-30 minutes, but it can also be used directly after blending. The sauce freezes well. Nutrition is for half a cup (1/8th of the recipe). A previous version used 28 ounces of water by refilling the tomato can once, but after reader feedback and re-testing, the recipe now uses 1 cup of water.
