Ingredients

Donuts
  • 1 cup flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • pinch of allspice
  • pinch of cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup applesauce
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
Maple Glaze
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl.
  2. Add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture and stir until combined.
  3. Transfer the batter to a gallon-sized plastic bag, cut off a corner, and pipe the batter into a greased mini-donut pan, filling each cavity about halfway.
Baking
  1. Bake the mini donuts for about 7-8 minutes. Remove them from the oven and lift each donut from the pan.
Frosting
  1. Melt 2 tablespoons butter with 1/4 cup brown sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a boil and continue boiling for about 2 minutes.
  2. Add maple syrup and 1 tablespoon milk, then bring the mixture back to a boil.
  3. Stir in powdered sugar, using the remaining tablespoon of milk to adjust the frosting consistency if needed.
  4. Keep the frosting over low heat while coating the donuts, then dip each mini donut into the glaze.

Notes

Fill the mini donut pan cavities about halfway so the batter has room to expand while baking.
